What is Windows XP End of Support?

Microsoft has provided support for Windows XP for the past 12 years. However, after April 8, 2014, Microsoft technical assistance for Windows XP will no longer be available, including automatic security updates that help protect your PC.

Focused on You will continue to service Windows XP systems upon request, after upgrading the malware protection (see below).

Microsoft will continue to provide antimalware signature updates for Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows XP until July 14, 2015.

If you continue to use Windows XP after support ends, your computer will still work but it might become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Also, as more software and hardware manufacturers continue to optimize for more recent versions of Windows, you can expect to encounter greater numbers of apps and devices that do not work with Windows XP.

Support end dates

Support for Windows XP ended on April 8, 2014.

Support for Windows Vista without any service packs ended on April 13, 2010. Support for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) ended on July 12, 2011. To continue support, make sure you've installed Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2), which will be supported until April 11, 2017.

Support for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) will end on January 14, 2020.

How do I stay protected?

To stay protected after XP support ends, you have several options:

Upgrade your malware protection

If we have worked on your PC, you already have the free version of Malwarebytes installed for on-demand use.  You can use the Protection tab in the application to upgrade to the Premium version for $24.95/year for up to 3 PCs.

Upgrade your current PC

Most older computers that are running Windows XP are able to run Windows Vista, and some can run Windows 7.  We can upgrade your Windows XP SP3 PC to Windows Vista SP2 for about $125, or to Windows 7 (limited to supported systems) for about $175.  Any infections must be removed prior to upgrading, which may add to the cost.

Get a new PC

If your current PC can't run Windows Vista, 7 or 8.1, it might be time to consider shopping for a new one.  Let us know what your needs are and we’ll find your perfect match!  We will also configure your new PC and transfer your files, settings, and licensed applications from your old PC for $100.
